Definition of ballad

 

Ballad: Originally a song accompanied by a dance. Later the name was applied to a narrative poem. Ballads, passed down by word of mouth, were direct and simple, with romantic, historical or supernatural setting. The literary ballad is a poem with the rhyme scheme abcb.
