Definition of register

 

Register: A variety of language used for a specific purpose, as opposed to dialect (which varies by speakers). Registers may be defined by reference to subject matter (filed of discourse, e.g. the jargon of sport), to medium (mode of discourse, e.g. printed material, letter, message on tape, etc.), or to level of formality (manner of discourse, e.g. formal, casual, familiar, etc.).
